The Museum was created in the Jubilee year 2000 by the will of the Episcopal Curia under the impetus of Mons. Salvatore del Ciuco in order to preserve and enhance the heritage of the diocese.

    Over the years it has undergone ups and downs but since 2005 it has been regularly open and has promoted the de facto creation of the new monumental complex (with the Cathedral and the Papal Palace). Included within this wide cultural offering, it has enabled the reacquisition of important spaces for the history of the city and has become an important cultural reality as well as a point of reference for tourists who choose the capital of Tuscia. The museum is divided into three sections (discover the works by clicking on each section):

Archaeological section

    Visiting the Museum means retracing the history of the Colle del Duomo and thus of the city of Viterbo from the most ancient times. In the archaeological section, Villanovan, Etruscan, Roman, and medieval artifacts can be enjoyed. There is a small excavation sample carried out during the construction of the Museum.
Historical-artistic section

    In the art gallery, it is possible to discover the art expressed in the area starting from the 13th century with the Madonna della Carbonara. But the visit also allows you to enjoy the masterpieces of Benvenuto di Giovanni, the “Crucifixion” traditionally attributed to the great Michelangelo, and the Caravaggesque Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, up to the works of the protagonists of the Roman eighteenth century such as Domenico Corvi.

    The paintings are also present in the guided tour route where it is possible to admire, among others, the masterpiece by Giovan Francesco Romanelli.

Sacred art section – Treasures of the Popes

    The history of these treasures, made such by the skill with which they were created, their beauty, and their historical importance, gives an idea of the importance of the diocese of Viterbo over the centuries.

    Here are collected the vestments and sacred objects belonging to popes such as John XXI, pope from 1276 to 1277, and Pius IX, pope from 1846 to 1878. Other valuable items are those used by cardinals and bishops, including very ancient ones such as the robe of St. Boniface from the 12th century. The art gallery also houses the portrait of Pope Innocent XIII, who was bishop in Viterbo from 1712 to 1719.

    Inside the premises there is a large conference room also used as a space for temporary exhibitions.

    The Museum can also be combined with a guided tour of parts of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence and the Papal Palace.

Various services are also offered to schools, designed for different age groups:

    guided tours of the Papal Palace;
    guided tours of the city of Viterbo;
    guided tours of other important monuments in the province of Viterbo, Rieti, and Rome;
    a cycle of preparatory lessons for the guided tour and trips, which can be held either on site or in schools in the province of Viterbo;
    cultural projects of 10, 20, or 30 hours on topics related to archaeology, history, and art history (a mix of classroom hours and field experiences)

The museum is open every day with the following hours:

    10:00 / 13:00 – 15:00 / 18:00 (winter hours – closed on weekdays Mondays)
