HIS BIOGRAPHY

Claudio Caldana was born on March 6, 1953 in Povegliano Veronese.

He graduated from the Art School of Verona and attended the Cignaroli Academy in the same city, taking courses in fresco, encaustic, and mural painting restoration. He has been painting for 45 years.
The early years were marked by a search to find a personal style in which he could recognize and distinguish himself. Navigating a vast sea of opportunities, Caldana landed on the most particular techniques: velvets, frescoes, encaustic, gold, light. The details are the true protagonists of every artistic period of this painter. The woman, faces, bodies, forms, shadows. Femininity is omnipresent.
For over 10 years, the artist has worked in informal and conceptual art with research works, installations, performances, and a specific cycle called “Landscapes of the Soul.” The souls outwardly shine and flaunt their purity, hiding the truth within. The strength of the colors chosen for the works and the decisive yet soft brushstrokes at times, hide this deep contrast.
Over the years Caldana has managed to enrich his curriculum with prestigious awards and over 160 exhibitions: in galleries, historic palaces, and foundations. Noteworthy are the exhibitions in Rome at the Bramante Halls, Palazzo Margani, International Academy of Modern Art, Palazzo della Ragione in Verona, Villa Gualino in Turin, “Palazzo Bentivoglio” (Ligabue Foundation) Gualtieri Reggio Emilia, and galleries such as: “Zamenhof” Milan, “Spazziottagoni” in Trastevere Rome, “Alba” Ferrara, Gallery of Modern Art in Pisa, GAM of Turin thanks to a 3rd Prize at the IV Biennale and at the Cloister of Bramante for the 2014 Rome Triennale. Also in many other places in Italy, Germany, France, and various European countries.
All of Caldana’s life revolves around art, he collaborates with galleries, creates murals, carries out small restorations, teaches painting privately and to groups. For 7 years he has taught painting and art history at the Verona Prison, intervening in schools and beyond with debates on prison and the values of life.

In recent years his attention has also turned to photography, without ever neglecting inner research. The cornerstone of his art as always.

THE CRITIQUE

In art, reality often does not coincide with the real, with what is visible and tangible, but with the emotions of consciousness. Entering the atmosphere of Claudio Caldana's works means entering the most intimate part of ourselves, managing to perceive hidden emotions, sometimes forgotten, but still alive within us. A play of light and shadow creates trepidation, accentuated by the different volumes of the impasto on the canvas.
The color, the material placed on the canvas, becomes the means through which the artist manages to leave the imprints of an inner expressiveness and to create a dialogue between the observer and what is being observed. From the center of the painting, a glow of light and a cry of hope always emanate, the will to bring out something from our self, from our thoughts and the deep images of our mind, often dark and gloomy, light that is given by the contrast of tones, from the mixture of colors white always emerges, sometimes dirty, sometimes clear as human thoughts are clear or confused. On the white rests the red of passion and energy, the black of fear, the blue of serenity, the yellow of warmth and peace.
Different feelings, which sometimes the human being struggles to fully express, values that are disappearing overwhelmed by the desire for material well-being, values that resurface as in an explosion attracted by the light of hope.
