Gabriella Fabbri was born in Teramo to a family of writers and artists: her grandfather Giovanni was a writer and publisher in Teramo between the late nineteenth century and 1938, the year the publishing house closed, which boasted the publication of numerous works by Abruzzese writers and a newspaper, “L’Italia Centrale”; her father Pasquale was an extremely versatile man: writer (winner in 1962 of the Teramo Prize, Abruzzo section), painter, sculptor, set designer, a fine connoisseur of Abruzzese history and art, he participated actively in the cultural and artistic life of the city until his untimely death in 1966.
In this climate of great artistic and cultural stimulation, Gabriella developed from an early age a keen interest in drawing and painting, which she cultivated as a self-taught artist, having attended the Classical High School and graduated in Literature from the University of Chieti with a thesis on “Popular Themes in the Art of Teramo.”
Winner of a competition for the subject of Art History, she taught it until the 2005/06 school year in various secondary schools in Abruzzo and Teramo.
In 1974, at the suggestion of painter Alberto Chiarini, she participated for the first time in a plein air event in Cerqueto di Fano Adriano, winning a prize. Thus began her artistic career (as can be seen from the attached curriculum): the first period in the seventies can be defined as the “green period,” in which the artist depicted synthetic landscapes with a predominance of green.
In the eighties, the “blue period” began: the landscape became a reflection on the relationship between shadow and light and a reason for surrealist expression of reality. This resulted in a solo exhibition in 1987 entitled “Beyond the Light,” held in Teramo in what is now a small permanent gallery: “Spazio 7 – Gabriella Fabbri,” at Via Filippi Pepe, 24.
Starting in 1994, the period of “vivid chromaticism” began, in which the palette became much richer with the inclusion of all colors; the focus was on the theme of the sphere, which became a metaphor for the ideal world, leading to her second solo exhibition entitled “Conversation,” first shown in Rome in 2000 at the “Palazzo Margutta” Gallery in Via Margutta and recently (September, October 2007) in Pescara at the Maison des Arts of the Pescara Abruzzo Foundation and in Teramo at the “C.Gambacorta” hall of the Banca di Teramo in December 2007 and January 2008.
The exhibition also featured the first installation created by the artist, a conversation with Piero della Francesca, to which three more were added in the following years: “Incontro,” “Ecce…monstrum,” “La denuncia degli occhi,” exhibited at various events.
Since 2000, her artistic activity has become much more intense with group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad, an activity that has been the subject of several solo shows, given that it is carried out on diverse themes and expressive modes.
Of interest is her approach to informal painting, which is evident in the cycle “Crossing Time,” in which the artist, inspired by the flow of time through the passing of the seasons perceived chromatically, frees herself from the compositional rigor of the previous period, creating sixty compositions free from any conceptual message and compositional scheme.
Through this experience, together with her interest in color, the dominant theme of her research, she arrived at the cycle “Cosmic Games,” which deals with the theme of energy in the Macrocosm and Microcosms, focusing on the relationships between these two dimensions and highlighting numerous conceptual cues.
A section of these themes, entitled “Microcosms - Of the Black Square,” was presented in her solo exhibition at Palazzo Cerulli in May and June 2008; a second section of the microcosms, entitled “Sequences,” was exhibited from October 29 to November 30, 2009, in the Auditorium of the Music High School, former Church of Santa Maria a Bitetto, in Via Stazio, curated by the “Primo Riccitelli” Concert Society.
During her artistic career, Gabriella Fabbri has received several awards and recognitions: from the first plein air events of the seventies, to competitions in the eighties, up to the most recent successes in the second and fourth “Giovan Battista Moroni” trophy in Bergamo in 2005 and 2007, in competitions organized by the “Accademia Internazionale Il Convivio” in Giardini Naxos in 2004, 2005, up to the prizes won in Messina in 2005 and 2006 in the first and second international competition named after “Filippo Juvara.”
Recently, she received the 2009 Woman Award for painting from the Federcasalinghe Association of the city of Teramo and placed third in the International Prize for Art and Culture “Ettore Petrolini” organized by the International Academy Partenopea “Federico II.”
