Her Biography
Giuseppa Matraxia was born in San Giovanni Gemini (Ag) on May 1, 1955, and moved to Palermo at the age of thirteen, where she still lives today.
Having grown up in close contact with nature, she transferred this interest in later years when she approached the world of art.
From a young age, she became passionate about painting from life, particularly the landscape painters of nineteenth-century France, Italy, and England.
Her love for painting is as great as her love for her homeland, and her canvases bear witness to this, depicting many of the most interesting views of the island, always seeking to capture its most evocative moments.
She has participated in national and international exhibitions and shows, repeatedly receiving awards and recognition from both juries and the public.
She appears in various art magazines and catalogs.
The Critique
Giuseppa Matraxia is an artist from Sicilian soil, that Sicily full of centuries-old traditions, unspoiled seas, millenary culture, and which contains so much artistic strength within its territory.
Giuseppa Matraxia is a valid example of the transmission of Sicilian art and fully belongs to the large group of artists from Trinacria.
It is impossible not to perceive in her works the love for belonging and the awareness of her roots.
The light mixed with shadows, smoothed over broad canvases, makes her works particularly refined and places them within a poetic-pictorial discourse, for which one could dedicate some evocative poems of Mediterranean culture.
Matraxia lavishly bestows with brush and palette Mediterranean colors, Sicilian places of tradition and history, seas of blue and clear waters irradiated by the scorching and pure sun, flora rich in colors, flights of seagulls ready to tell stories of love and abandonment, vegetables and fruits, especially citrus, products of a warm and fertile land.
Her seascapes, so clean, so real, so shaped in abundant light, give us all the enthusiasm for her sea, for every rock it embraces. Every color that is laid down chisels a nuance, a thought, almost like a sought and desired kiss. They reflect the apparent calm of a relaxing sea that can become torment for the artist when, once the work is finished, the sea does not take on the desired and intended appearance.
It is impossible not to be carried away by these visions that tell of daily life, serenity, and peace... and one turns to the moon... asking it to accompany us in this sea of infinite space.
In her meticulous painting, the artist Matraxia envelops us with her still lifes, perfect compositions that pay homage to an avant-garde hyperrealism, never predictable, but always in vogue for lovers of meticulousness and perfection.
Flowers, fruits, lace, and embroidery in realistic shapes and colors follow one another in a parade of splendid works of great breadth. In particular, attention lingers on splendid harmonious compositions, laid on a dark background in a sharp contrast of chromaticism that makes the works precious, enveloping, and refined.
Love for art becomes an essential component for every self-respecting artist; for Giuseppa Matraxia's painting, this component is not lacking, as can be seen in every pictorial expression of hers, in every brushstroke, in every shade of color.
The light is elaborated... not excessive, the refinement of forms is well studied, the lines well defined, the colors are clean, the technique excellent, all of which is rendered true and, combined with the poetic feeling of a language of absolute refinement, elegance, and meditation, exalts as a whole works of fine technique.
And when emotions are tied to the heart, then everything becomes harmony, melodious music, catharsis of the soul and body that shapes itself to desires, dreams, life.
There is no life without nature, and the nature of Giuseppa Matraxia is energetic, clean, rich in images that bring us to unfillable and fantastic visual sensations for a land that knows how to give us so much, that is so loved, that is sometimes even envied, but that is also so mistreated.
Art, therefore, of all respect and of technique well acquired over time, but which also becomes a suffered art because it is an integral part of a life, that of the Sicilian artist GIUSEPPA MATRAXIA, who gives so much to those who receive from her painting and offers it to us with her infinite sensitivity.
