Her Biography
My name is Piera Oria Strobino, known as ORIA, I was born in Cossato (Biella) and I live in Cesena.
I am self-taught, so to the question: "When did you start painting?" I should answer that perhaps I was born with colors in my hands...!
My passion for art has always supported me.
I have experimented with curiosity and passion with various techniques and this search of mine is always ongoing.
Among my favorite subjects are nature, the human figure, faces, especially female ones.
In 2008 I completed a very demanding work, which lasted more than two years and resulted in personal traveling exhibitions and the publication of a book that collects the paintings and the historical research of emerging figures in the female world.
The exhibition and the book Being Woman, which includes 40 paintings and related texts, is in fact an excursus on the condition of women through the centuries, with moments of reflection that go beyond ideologies, religion and conventions, but which aims to focus attention on the social role and the peaks of excellence reached by women in 2000 years of known history. The exhibition is intended as a tribute to women of value, as well as to the ability, tenacity and willpower of women that have allowed these important figures to achieve a conscious and recognized role.
The Critique
The women of Oria Strobino
From Corriere Romagna of October 15, 2008
The exhibition entitled “Being Woman” is the result of over two years of work between historical research and
artistic execution, since Oria intended to create a chronological excursus, from prehistory to the present day,
on the condition of women, through figurative scenes and portrait supports combined with explanatory texts
on the biography of the women depicted or on historical data relating to the figurative elaboration.
The whole thing is configured as a fresco of the evolution of the condition of women through the centuries.
The exhibition is documented in the homonymous catalog, a real book published by the publishing company
“Il Ponte Vecchio” of Cesena, edited by Melita Vicini Mantero, which presents the works with the
related sheets.
From the very first approach, the painter's graphic skills stand out, as she successfully tackles the difficult
technique of portrait and nude and shows that she knows how to adapt each of her creations to the historical moment
described, from the ideal mythological composition of Gea, with a distinctly fairytale flavor, to those marked
by the typical languages of various civilizations, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Aryan, medieval, up to the portraits of
great women who marked the twentieth century, such as Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Rita
Levi Montalcini.
The exhibition ends with three paintings: the first two address the problem of violence against women, while
the last, illustrated by the related sheet entitled “Angel or demon?”, prompts reflection.
